Sono nato a Ragusa il 28 settembre 1961. A 18 anni, fini to il liceo classico, sono già il gm della squadra della mia città. Con quattro soldi e per risparmiare l’idea vincente: portare in Sicilia i migliori in uscita dalla categoria juniores. Giro l’Italia come talent scout, convinco Club e famiglie, a Ragusa gestisco un college come a tutt’oggi non ne esistono e mi faccio conoscere.
Firmo il primo contratto da Gm professionista a Gorizia e lì Pieraldo Celada, proprietario e gm che per primo del basket fa un lucroso business, mi chiama a Desio dove ho il piacere e la fortuna di lavorare con Sergio Scariolo allenatore vincendo il campionato di A2.
Nel 1994 inizio a lavorare come agente, facendo quel che già facevo: grazie a contatti, passione e competenza, creo per i miei giocatori le condizioni migliori per eccellere. In pochi anni firmo Gentile al Panathinaikos, Esposito nella NBA, porto Podkolzin al draft NBA.
Dal 2005 inizia a collaborare come consulente Massimo Sorrentino . Dal 2008 sono Presidente dell’Associazione Agenti italiani. Sono amato e odiato, rispettato e temuto: è il prezzo del successo. Ma sono sempre Ricky, “il ragazzo di Ragusa”, con la stessa voglia ed entusiasmo degli inizi presente in tutti i campi dall’under 15 all’Eurolega.
I was born in Ragusa in September of 1961. At the age of 18, just after finishing high school, I started working as the General Manager for my home town's basketball team. I had a small budget combined with a winning idea — that is to bring the best young junior league players from all over Italy to Sicily. I then travelled across Italy as a talent scout convincing basketball teams (clubs), players and families to play in the most southern point of Italy and that I could manage a College of Players like nobody else.
It was at that point that I made a name for myself. I signed my first professional player contract as the General Manager in Gorizia. That is when I got an important call in Desio from Pieraldo Celada — one of the first people who made basketball management a real business. I worked with the coach Sergio Scariolo and we won the A2 League.
In 1994 I started working as an agent, basically doing what I had already been doing as the General Manager yet on a professional level. Thanks to contracts and knowhow, I was able to create the best options for my players to succeed. In few years, I signed Gentile at Panathinaikos and Esposito in the NBA. I brought Podkolwine to the NBA draft.
In 2005 Massimo Sorrentino began a cooperation with me . In 2008 I become President of the Basketball Agents Union in Italy. People either love me or hate me. Some respect me while others are scared. It’s the price of success. Nonetheless, I will always be Ricky, The Regusa Boy, with the same will and enthusiasm of the early years that I now see in the under age 15 players of the Euroleague.
